Obituary for Karen Dale Shrum

Karen. Shrum, 65, passed away Saturday, October 1, 2022, in Altus, Oklahoma. Memorial services have been scheduled for 4:00 p.m., Friday, October 7, 2022 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Eric Easter officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory.

Karen was born May 28, 1957, in Olustee, Oklahoma to John Troy and Mary Ruth Doughten.

She was raised and educated in Olustee, Oklahoma.  While living in Olustee,  Karen met and fell in love with Jimmy Shrum. On July 7, 1972, Jimmy and Karen were united in holy matrimony. This marriage would be blessed with four children: Christina, Kerry, Mary, and Jimmy. Karen was a devoted wife and mother who dedicated herself to providing for her husband and children's every need.

Karen had an incredible work ethic and unmatched intelligence.  She worked at Kellwood's as a seamstress for many years before the plant closed. Upon its closing, Karen enrolled in the Vo-Tech learning data input. Before graduating she found a position doing data entry for Lowell – Tims Funeral Home and Crematory.  Soon her intelligence and tenacity made her the ideal office manager and ran numerous funeral homes for Ron and Ada Lowell. In 2008, after Ron Lowell opened a funeral home in Arkansas, she became a licensed funeral director. She also managed the Lowell – Tims Monument Company and helped supervised the installation and running of a laser engraver. Karen was extremely meticulous about her monuments. She made sure everything was perfect before they left the building. She worked at Lowell – Tims for over thirty-seven years only retiring weeks before her passing.

To know Karen was to know how much she loved her children and grandchildren. She adored spending every minute she could with them. Her favorite day was Sunday because the family always had a big Sunday meal together in which they would get caught up and fellowship. She loved people and helping others. She always gave her time, love, and finances to those in need. Her kindness, beautiful smile, and love for her family will forever be remembered by all who knew her.

Karen was received into heaven by her father,  John Troy Doughten, mother, Mary Ruth Doughten, her sister, Kathy G. Doughten and her beloved husband and best friend Jimmy Shrum.

Left to honor Karen’s memory are her three daughters, Mary Mae and Tony Guevara of Lawton, Oklahoma, Christina and Allen Collins of Altus, Kerry Shrum of Frederick; one son, Jimmy and Callista Shrum of Russell, Oklahoma, Sister, Lynn Fisher of South Carolina, Brothers, Johnny Doughten of Duke, Oklahoma, and Pat Doughten, of Duke, Oklahoma.  She also left mourning Karen’s nineteen  grandchildren,  seven great-grandchildren, her four-legged companion Buddy,  and numerous nieces nephews and other extended family members, friends, and her work family at Lowell – Tims Funeral Home.
