John Robert McMahan, Jr.
John Robert McMahan Jr., passed away Thursday, January 26, 1995 at Southwest Medical Center in Lawton, Oklahoma. He was born to Olive and Booker McMahan on February 11, 1924 in Altus.
John was a farmer for numerous years until retiring in 1972. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Altus. John was a member of the VFW and the Elks Golf and County Club. He was a life member of the DVA.
Mr. McMahan attended Altus High School and later graduated from New Mexico Military Academy. During the years of 1952 and 1953, he served on the ASCS Board, under the Eisenhower Administration. He served in the Army and was injured in November of 1944 at St. Die, France, and received the Purple Heart.
John was a good, kind person always ready to help others. He was well loved by friends and neighbors. John owned a lawn tractor, and enjoyed mowing the yard. He was always mowing his neighbors yards, just because he wanted to.
John was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by LaVon, his wife of 24 years; a son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Elizabeth McMahan of Ojai, California; a daughter, Renee Pendergast of Tempe, Arizona; three step-sons and their wives, Danny and CarlAnn Mains of Altus, Mike and Carla Mains of Tulsa and Sammy and Karen Mains of Austin, Texas; a sister, Bertille Rollins and her husband, retired Colonel Al Rollins of Huntsville, Al., fourteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a number of cousins and other family members and friends.
