Obituary for Joe Edgar Farris
Joe Edgar Farris, age 82, of Tipton, Oklahoma, was born January 7th, 1916, in Frederick, Oklahoma, the son of the late John Edgar and Astrea Alberta (Gober) Farris. He was a lifelong resident of Tillman County, moving into Tipton in 1963. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, serving as an Aviation Machinist's Mate Third Class. Joe passed away Sunday, April 12th, 1998, in the Comanche County Memorial Hospital, Lawton, OK, after a brief illness.
Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 14th, 1998, in the Bethel Baptist Church west of Frederick with Rev. David Pierce, Rev Everett Smalts, and Rev Randy Robertson officiating. Burial will be in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Lowell Tims Funeral Home, Altus,OK. Mr. Farris' body will lie in state at the Tipton Funeral Home Chapel from Monday afternoon until noon on Tuesday.
On November 21, 1939, he and Nora Belle Jeffries were united in marriage at Frederick, Oklahoma. Mrs. Farris preceded him in death on April 15, 1996. Joe was a farmer and an upholsterer. He served on the Tipton School Board for ten years; he also served one term on the City Council of Tipton. He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and taught Sunday School for many years.
He is survived by one daughter, JoAnn Cavel and her husband Curtis of Lawton, Oklahoma; two granddaughters, Jennifer and Janet Cavel both of Lawton; and three sisters, Louise McKinley of Houston, TX, Mae True and Ruth Nelms, both of Amarillo, TX.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nora Belle and three brothers, Cecil, Scott and Max Farris.
Memorials may be made to the Bethel Baptist Church.
