Jerry D. Bevers, 52, of Altus, passed away Saturday morning, September 5, 2009, at his home after a short battle with cancer.
Jerry was born December 29, 1956, in Altus to Joe and Jerri (Cheatwood) Bevers. He spent his entire life in Jackson County and graduated from Altus High School in 1976. Jerry went to work for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation in June 1981. Jerry earned the respect and admiration of his co-workers. In a recent card from his Division 5 ODOT workers, it was pointed out "We have many great road and bridge projects all throughout the state because of Jerry Bevers." Jerry worked for 28 years with ODOT. Even though Jerry was informed of his pending fate, he continued to work right up to the point where he couldn"t walk anymore.
Jerry was an avid NASCAR fan and was a collector of miniature NASCAR cars. He and his mother lived together in the same house where his entire family grew up. His brothers and sister could count on Jerry to provide comfort, support, and care for their mother. The joy in his life was the love and pride he had for his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He spent many hours "on the floor" playing with each of them.
In the end, Jerry gathered his strength from his faith. Jerry didn"t ask why, he just knew where he was going and that made all the difference.
Jerry had two final wishes near the end of his life. One was to buy a big screen TV. After being told by the doctor that his time was slipping away, Mitch, Carla, and Mom pushed Jerry around Sam"s in a wheelchair so he could select "his" big screen. He watched his TV right up to the end with a smile.
A final wish that wasn"t mortally granted was an airplane ride. Most of his family had flown, yet Jerry hadn"t. Through the effort of Don Watson, a close family friend, it was arranged for Jerry to be flown around Altus on September 6th. Jerry missed his mortal flight by one day, but in the words of the old hymn, Jerry could almost be heard saying "I"ll Fly Away."
Some of the family"s greatest memories with Jerry include: every Thanksgiving evening after a long day of feasting, Jerry and the rest of the Bevers" family would meet at the Altus Park to walk through the Christmas light displays; during the summer of 2006, Jerry, Mom, Mitch, and his family traveled with Stan and his family to New Mexico and southern Colorado for a vacation. Several nights were spent in cabins in the mountains. Jerry can be remembered sitting on the banks of the Conejas River in Colorado trout fishing; many years, all the family members loaded up and traveled to the NASCAR track near Ft. Worth for the annual race; Jana, a niece of Jerry"s, remembers being invited to go along with Jerry, Mom, and Mitch to Branson, Missouri. In the waning days of Jerry"s life, family members recall watching Jerry play with his nieces and nephews. His family, wonderful friends, and co-workers will miss him.
Preceded in death by his dad, Joe Bevers, September 16, 1999, Jerry is survived by mother, Jerri Bevers, of the home in Altus; one sister, Carla Guthrie and husband Johnny of Altus; two brothers, Mitchell Bevers and wife Libby of Altus and Stan Bevers and wife Tina of Vernon, Texas; nieces and nephews, Amy and Ben Morris, Lee and Kim Vier, Kyle Bevers, Dana Bevers, Jana and Jonathan Ramirez; great-nieces and great-nephews, Patrick Rice, Garrett Morris, Kortni Morris, Savanna Vier, Abby Vier, and Natalie Ramirez. He is also survived by a special family friend, Meltri Allday, of Altus.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 8, at Lowell-Tims Chapel.

Funeral Services for Jerry Bevers will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at the First Baptist Church in Altus with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
