Born January 11, 1952, in Vernon, Texas, to Herbert and Irene Ball Johnson, James grew up in Oklahoma and the surrounding areas of Frederick, Tipton, and Vernon, Texas. After completing his education, he proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving in the 2nd Marine Division as a tank crewman and later as a military police officer. His service took him to Camp Lejeune, Hawaii, and overseas deployments, where he faithfully fulfilled his duty to his country.Following his military service, James worked at the cotton press in Altus until an injury in 1977. On February 11, 1985, he married the love of his life, Barbara Johnson. Together, they shared over 36 years of marriage filled with devotion and love until her passing.
A man of deep faith, James was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Altus and later Corinth Baptist Church. One of his most treasured spiritual milestones was being baptized alongside his family on May 26, 2024. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, listening to Elvis Presley music, and admired the strength and beauty of wolves and eagles. Known for his determined and sometimes stubborn spirit, James also held a special and enduring bond with his daughter-in-law, Trina, whom he loved and cherished as one of his own children. Above all, he found his greatest joy in spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, generosity, selfless nature, and the warmth he brought to all who knew him.
James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Johnson; his parents, Herbert and Irene Johnson; his sons, Karl Lovett and Jimmy Lovett, Jr.; his brother, Jimmy Barnes; his aunt, Mary Woods; and his sister-in-law, Judy Johnson.
