Obituary for James David Martin
Jim Martin, 81, longtime resident of Mangum, passed away in Oklahoma City on May 12, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born on August 17, 1937 in Wichita Falls, Texas to John Henry Martin and Nina Wayne (Cushman) Martin. He graduated from Sentinel High School, in Sentinel Oklahoma. While in high school, Jim was quite the basketball player and catcher for the baseball team. After high school, he joined the Air Force where he was a flight medic. Quickly after joining the Air Force he married the love of his life Marjorie (Laughlin). Of this marriage they had three children; Vickie, Greg, and David.
After Jim retired from the Air Force, he went to work at the Oklahoma State Reformatory in Granite, Oklahoma. He worked there for a year before going to work for the post office as a mail carrier in 1978. Jim worked for the post office until he retired in 2003. He was a proud member of the Church of New Beginnings as well as The United Pentecostal Church. Jim enjoyed fishing, and gardening. He loved his family and cherished anytime he could spend with his children and grandchildren. Jim was a big Oklahoma Sooners fan as well as a Dallas Cowboy Football fan.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, eight sisters and one brother, and son-in-law, Gary Cooley.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie Martin of Mangum, Oklahoma; Sons; Greg Martin and wife Terri of Mangum, Oklahoma, David Lee Martin and wife Sara of Mangum, Oklahoma, Daughter, Vickie Lynn Cooley, ten grandchildren; Travis Cooley and wife Rachel of McLoud, Oklahoma, Amanda Beltran and husband Carlos of Shawnee, Oklahoma, Greg Martin and wife April of Mangum, Oklahoma, Tadd Martin, and wife Lindsey of Mangum, Oklahoma, Zach Martin and wife Shannon, of Mangum, Oklahoma, Kylie Martin of Mangum, Oklahoma, Jaysha Zuniga, of Medford, Oregon, Justice Martin, of Mangum, Oklahoma, James Martin, of Mangum, Oklahoma, and Brionna Martin, of Mangum, Oklahoma. Twelve great-grandchildren; Preston, Lola, Zoey, Enrique, Jase, Madison, Daylen, Rhett, Dexton, Turner, Remi and Ridlee. Nephew Johnny Joe Martin of California, and numerous other special family members and friends.
The family will receive friends 5:00-7:00p.m., Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at Greer Funeral Home, Mangum, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held at 1:00p.m., Thursday, May 16, 2019 at Living Water United Pentecostal Church in Mangum, Oklahoma with interment to follow at Roselawn Cemetery, in Mangum.
