Obituary for Jack William Graves
Jack William Graves, 93, of Altus, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
Jack was born December 12, 1918, in Tipton, Oklahoma, to Perry Murphy and Willie Mae (Chapman) Graves. He was one of eleven children. Jack served his country during World War II as a Sergeant in the Army Air Corp from October 15, 1942 to December 22, 1945. He married Aline Ellis in June of 1948 in Hess, Oklahoma. They raised five wonderful children together, Lynda Sue, Robert Dale, Jackie Jean, Sam Ellis, and Carol Ann. Aline passed away in 1973. On October 18, 1983, Jack married DeEsta (Allen) Jones in Vernon, Texas.
Jack loved to farm, and this vocation was his life's work. He raised and sold cattle, wheat, and cotton. Any day he was on his tractor was a happy day for Jack. His favorite hobby was raising vegetables in his garden near his house. Jack was a daily Bible reader and believed as well as lived his life according to the Word. He taught his children the value of hard work, clean living, and being kind to others. Jack was a Sunday School Teacher for boys and girls at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Altus for 48 years.
Jack is survived by his wife, DeEsta Graves of Hobart, Oklahoma; five children, Lynda Crandall and husband Edward of Inman, South Carolina, Robert Graves and wife Linda of the Philippine Islands, Jackie Rutledge of Lawton, Oklahoma, Sam Graves of Altus, and Carol Jumper and husband Woody of Big Spring, Texas; several step-children, nineteen grandchildren, thirty-six great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren; fifteen step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Aline Graves, and ten brothers and sisters.
The family will receive friends Sunday, February 12 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
Funeral Services for Jack Graves will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 13, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Altus with Pastor Gregory Hawn and Reverend Synott Matthews officiating. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
