Obituary for J.T. Bevers

J T Bevers, 92, passed away Friday, November 17, 2006 at Integris Medical Center in Oklahoma City. J T was born March 4, 1914 in Paris, Texas, to Sam and Minnie Ola (Gaines) Bevers. He came with his family, as a young child, crossing the Red River by wagon into Oklahoma. He married Estine Striklen on December 14, 1935, in Mangum. They spent sixty-six wonderful years together before her death on May 1, 2001.

He was an avid farmer and fisherman throughout his life. Encouraging new growth in the farming community, he was one of the first to draw water out of the Altus lake to irrigate his cotton crops. He worked as a night auditor at Quartz Mountain Lodge for twenty-three years. He served as a deacon at First Baptist Church, Blair, for over thirty years, from 1939 until 1969 and upon retirement moved to Indian Lake, Texas. After Estine's death, he moved to Minnesota for four years and more recently lived in Oklahoma City.

Preceding him in death were his wife and two brothers, Fred Bevers and Jess Bevers, and one sister Bell Rose Bevers. Survivors include 3 sons; John of Chula Vista, California, Eugene of Brownsville, Texas, and Charles of Brownsville, Texas; a daughter, Lazette Bevers Chang-Yit of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; his brother, Leon Bevers of Altus; two sisters, Nora Dell Machin and Betty Jo Barnett both of Altus; a sister-in-law, Eunice Marple, Lawton, OK, and a brother-in-law, John Stricklen of Overland Park, Kansas; eight grandchildren; thirteen greatchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He will be remembered as a gentle man who was a domino player extraordinaire, fisherman, great story teller and most of all a loving father with a terrific sense of humor.

Funeral services will be at 2 pm Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at the First Baptist Church in Blair, Oklahoma with Rev. Randy Mitchell officiating. Internment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral of Altus.
