Obituary for Hollis H. Vinson
VINSON
Hollis Haldane Vinson, age 82 of Mangum, went to meet his savior at Altus, OK on April 26th, 2013, after a brief illness.
Hollis was born Feb 13, 1931, at the family home near Brinkman, OK. He graduated from Reed High School in 1949. He moved to Pleasant Mt, PA to help his sister's family run their dairy. Hollis moved back to Mangum in 1973 where he worked for a short time at Mangum Oil and Gas. Hollis worked as a carpenter for many years, working on most of the homes in the Mangum area over the years. Hollis married Marie Davis at 1 minute past midnight on New Year's Day 1983 in Mangum. He spent a year in South Carolina working on homes after Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Many people sought out his skills and knowledge on how to fix problems with their homes and buildings. A child of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, he understood hard work, valued independence and being happy with whatever he had. Hollis was a quiet man who kept things simple, and always tried to do things the right way. He believed in treating people fairly and honestly. He tried to instill those same principles in his children. Hollis loved his family, his church and going fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Edith Vinson, and brothers Harry and Bob Vinson. He is survived by his wife Marie Vinson of Mangum; 3 sisters, Marge O"Neill of Pleasant Mt, PA, Betty & husband Jerry Brown of Spiro, OK, Margaret Ann Wilkins of Benton Harbor, MI. He is also survived by children Linda & husband Blane Orndorff of Orrtanna, PA, Jim & wife Cindy Vinson of Montross, Va , Georgia & husband Derek Hartzell of Gettysburg, PA, Philip Vinson of Americus, GA and the children"s mother Dorothy Moase; Doug and wife Viola Davis of Lubbock, TX, Robert and wife Irene Davis of Oklahoma City, OK, and Cleatus and wife Shelly Davis of Mangum. He is also survived by 15 Grandchildren Raichelle Ruppert, Janelle Wise, Zachary Orndorff, Bridget Lawrie-Orndorff, Kevin Vinson, Darren Hartzell, Hayden Hartzell, Kyle Ballou, Lyle Ballou, Valerie Smith, Heath Davis, Seth Davis, David Davis, Trevor Cathey and Kirstie Davis. As well as, 24 Great Grandchildren.
Funeral services for Hollis Vinson will be at 4p.m., Monday, April 29, 2013, at the Abundant Life Church of Mangum under the direction of Greer Funeral Home.
