Obituary for Helen LaVerne Corey
LaVerne Corey, 84, an Altus resident for 56 years, passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2008 at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City.
LaVerne was born December 12, 1923, in Mountain View, Oklahoma, to Arthur Henry Peter and Emma Elizabeth (Vandegrift) Slohn. LaVerne married Clarence H. Corey May 22, 1943 in Oklahoma City. They owened and operated Altus Glass Company from 1952 until his death in 1987, and LaVerne continued to operate the business until she retired in 1994. Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, knitting, reading, swimming, and pulling for the Texas Rangers baseball team. She also enjoyed watching her son Arthur and his family riding and competing in The Grand National Horsemen Association. LaVerne was a devoted daughter, wife and mother. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Altus.
LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur H. and Emma Slohn; her husband, Clarence Corey; her son, Wayne Corey in 1984; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Slohn and Jacqueline Young, and her brother-in-law, B.C. Young. She is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Corey of Altus; two sons, Arthur Corey and his wife Debby of Duke and Flint Corey and wife Linda of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; one brother, Truman Slohn of Oklahoma City; three grandchildren. Stephanie Arnold, Jennifer Birmingham, and Wende Arnold; seven great-grandchildren, Tobey, Nicholas and Shelby, Hunter, Haleigh and Chris and Gavyn; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral Services for LaVerne Corey will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2008, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Chapel in Altus with Reverend Delbert Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Cemetery in Altus under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
