Obituary for Harvey Wayne Matheson

Harvey Wayne Matheson, a lifelong resident of Harmon County, put down his working tools and returned to the supreme architect on April 12, 2024, at Harmon County Memorial Hospital, at the age of ninety.

Born on April 5, 1934, in Harmon County, Harvey was the cherished son of Raymond and Opal Matheson. He was nurtured in their loving embrace and received his education, culminating in graduation from Arnett High School. Wayne answered the call to serve his country with honor, enlisting in the United States Army on December 11, 1955. Throughout his service, he was primarily stationed in Germany, dutifully fulfilling his obligations to his nation.

On July 14, 1956, Wayne embarked on a lifelong journey of love and companionship as he exchanged vows with the love of his life, Myrtle Ruth Hundley, in Hollis, Oklahoma. Their union was blessed with the joy of two children, a son named Monte and a daughter named Monica. Harvey and Ruthie celebrated an enduring 65 years of marriage until Ruth's passing in July 2021, a loss deeply felt by Harvey and all who knew their bond.

An entrepreneur at heart, Wayne pursued various careers with vigor and determination. From selling farm equipment for John Deere to serving with the Oklahoma State Highway Department, his industrious spirit knew no bounds. He also ventured into retail, owning a Sears store and a pawnshop, and even assumed the esteemed role of Mayor of Hollis at one point in time.

In his leisure moments, Harvey found solace in the pursuit of treasure, be it in the form of collectibles such as guns, toy cars, or rocks and minerals. He harbored a passion for western movies, particularly those featuring his beloved John Wayne, and delighted in sharing his vast knowledge of history through engaging storytelling with friends and family.

A stalwart member of the Masonic fraternity, Harvey dedicated over 55 years of his life to Freemasonry, attaining the distinguished rank of 32nd° Scottish Rite Mason. He fervently upheld the values of the fraternity, devoting himself to the betterment of both the lodge and the men of Hollis, Oklahoma.

Wayne's legacy is further enriched by his love for the great outdoors, where he found joy in hunting and fishing, instilling in others the appreciation for nature's bounty and the importance of camaraderie.

Harvey Wayne Matheson is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Opal Matheson, his brothers Cecil Ray, and Kenneth Joe "Kenny" Matheson, his sister Linda Kay Matheson, and his beloved wife, Myrtle Ruth Matheson.
