Obituary for Harry Joe Adkins
Joe Adkins, age 74, died Thursday, February 10, 2011, at his home in Kingston, Oklahoma, with his family by his side.
Joe was born December 5, 1936, in Bells, Texas, to Walter F. and Mary (Ayers) Adkins. The family moved to Walters, Oklahoma when Joe was six years old. He graduated high school in 1955. He married Carrie Ellen Townsend August 22, 1959, in Walters. Joe worked at Convair in Dallas, Texas, for two years. At the age of fourteen, Joe worked on the farm and drove a tractor from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. He went on harvest jobs for several years, managed cattle, broke horses, and rode bulls. He raised cattle and farmed wheat for 20 years.
Joe attended Oklahoma State University School of Fire Protection and graduated in 1960. He worked at the General Adjustment Bureau as a Fire and Casualty insurance adjuster. Later, he went to work for Farmers and Merchants Bank in Duke, Oklahoma, and worked as an assistant cashier starting in October of 1962. He was promoted to President of the bank in 1978 and retired February 29, 2004. He was in the banking business for forty-one years and enjoyed helping his customers in need.
Joe was the president of the Duke Chamber of Commerce, the Fire Chief for the Duke Volunteer Fire Department, and a certified instructor in fire safety at WOSC. He and his wife Carrie moved to Kingston, Oklahoma, in June of 2006. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and noodling.
Preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dee Adkins, Joe is survived by his loving wife, Carrie Adkins of Kingston; one son, Joe Craig Adkins and wife Carolyn of Wichita, Kansas; one daughter, Julie Swihart and husband Scott of Altus; five granddaughters, who called him "DeDad", Lacee and Major Davis of Altus, Stacee and Shawn Garton of Hollis, Kenze Killingsworth of Altus, Samantha Adkins of Altus, Larissa Adkins of Dallas, Texas; two step-granddaughters, Emily Vollmeier and husband Richard of Oklahoma City and Lindsay Swihart, also of Oklahoma City; one step-grandson, Tanner Swihart of Altus; ten great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Joann Adkins of Loveland, Colorado; a nephew, Jason Adkins of Denver, Colorado; a niece, Lannie Adkins of Oklahoma City, and many friends throughout southwest Oklahoma and Kingston.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Rock Cemetery or the Duke School Foundation, c/o Farmers and Merchants Bank, Box 190, Duke, OK, 73532.
The family will receive friends Sunday, February 13, 2011, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus.
Funeral Services for Joe Adkins will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 14, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Duke with Reverend Terry Thomas and Reverend Scott Gramling officiating. Interment will follow at Rock Cemetery north of Duke under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
