Obituary for Gwendolyn Ruth Thomas
Gwendolyn "Gwen" Ruth Thomas, age 65 of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at the Bridges Rehabilitation at Plantation Village in Altus.
Gwen was born in Roswell, New Mexico on August 11, 1952 to her parents Roy Winfred Thomas and Julia Louise (Henderson) Thomas. Gwen was raised in an Air Force family and traveled many places in the Southwest. The family landed at Altus Air Force Base where Gwen primarily grew up. She went to Nursing School and worked at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus on the third floor during the night shift for many years. She was a longtime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Altus where she loved serving the Lord in any way that she could. Gwen was an accomplished quilter, writer and artist. She belonged to the Altus Quilters Guild and her quilts won many ribbons over the years.
Preceded in death by her parents and two nephews, Tracy L. Sawyer and James C. Sawyer; Gwen is survived by her three sisters, Janice Fay Thomas of New Hampshire; Wanda Lynn York and husband Terry of Durham, Oklahoma; and Peggy Baker and husband James of Missouri; eight nieces and nephews, Barbara and Jennifer; Vanessa, Tracy, Jennifer, and Joey; Matthew and Jason; as well as other family members and many friends.
Viewing will be from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Sunday, December 31, 2017 with the family receiving friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 2, 2017 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Altus with interment following at Navajo Cemetery in Friendship, Oklahoma under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory, Altus, Oklahoma.
