Obituary for Gwendolyn Faye Shirley
Gwendolyn Faye Hall Douglas Shirley, a beloved Christian mother and family matriarch, passed away peacefully at the age of ninety-six on November 21, 2024, at English Village Nursing Home in Altus, Oklahoma. She was born on September 29, 1928, in Blair, Oklahoma, the youngest of eight children born to Martin K. Hall and Esther Victoria West Hall.
Gwendolyn was raised in Blair, where she attended school and became an active member of the local Baptist Church from a young age. After graduating from Blair High School, she met and married W.L. "Dub" Douglas, the love of her life. Together, they made their home in Midwest City, where they were blessed with twin daughters, Janelle and Janine, born on July 17, 1951. Gwendolyn's greatest joy was being a devoted mother, and she cherished every moment spent caring for and nurturing her daughters.
She worked for several years as a pharmaceutical clerk at Tubb Drugs in Midwest City, where she had the pleasure of working alongside her favorite nephew, Lionel Cross. Later, she continued her career at Sam's Club before retiring.
Throughout her life, Gwendolyn was a committed member of Valleybrook Baptist Church, where her faith in God was the foundation of everything she did. A lifelong Baptist, she found strength and peace in the Word of God. She was an avid lover of nature and enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, and spending time at her cherished lake house in Eufaula. In 2014 Gwen returned to Blair to live with her nephew Lionel and Cindy Cross.
Above all, Gwendolyn's deep love for her family was central to her life. She was a faithful Christian woman, and her legacy of love, devotion, and faith will continue to inspire those who knew her.
Gwendolyn was preceded in her father, Martin Karikor Hall; mother, Esther Victoria (west) Hall; seven siblings, Martin Lee Hall, Odella Hall Dennis, Coy Derl Hall, Foy Earl Hall, Gaylon Hall, Daniel Nelson Hall, Lola Hall Portwood, Thelma Hall; Niece in law, Cindy Cross; great nephew, Gregory Cross, nephew, Gary Cross, niece, Jereta Hall. daughters, Janelle Douglas and Janine Lollar ; husband, Bruce Shirley, and her first husband W.L. "Dub" Douglas.
Left to carry on her legacy are her nieces, and nephews, Lionel Cross, Bryan Lee Hall, Adora Hall, James Eldon Dennis, Mart Dennis, Kemy Mark Hall, Lisa Ann Hall Hyde, Ernest Hall, Scott T. Hall, Derl Lee Hall, Dave A. Hall, Danya Joy Hall, special great nieces, Stephanie and husband Don Moreau, Amber Cross, special great nephews, Jay and wife Myrna Cross, . Niece in law, Ronna Cross; numerous great - nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
Open visitation will be 2:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Sunday, 24, November , 2024 with the family to receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at Lowell - Tims Funeral Home, Altus, Oklahoma.
Funeral services be 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 25, 2024 at the Centennial Chapel at the Altus City Cemetery, Altus, Oklahoma.
