Grace Barker, 90, formerly of Mangum, passed away on October 8, 2009 in Pasadena, California
Grace was born on January 18, 1919 in Colbert County, Alabama to Joseph and Sallie Hanvey. She spent her growing up days in Alabama and her high school years in Blytheville, Arkansas. At age 20, she came to Mangum to live with her aunt, "Beverly". In Mangum, Grace worked at the Hinds Laundry for Billie Hines where she met Loyd Barker. They were married in December 1943, in Blytheville, Arkansas. At the time that they were married, Loyd was in active military and after a short honeymoon was off to Europe as combat tank driver in World War II.
After the war, Loyd returned to Mangum to share his life with Grace. Loyd farmed land west of Mangum and Grace worked many years at Garrett"s Furniture in Mangum. Grace also enjoyed her quilting and the annual garden of vegetables and fruit that she canned for her family and friends.
Both Loyd, who predeceased Grace in 1999, were long time and active members of the Mangum Church of Christ where Grace spent her spare time assisting in lunches and dinners for church families and the community. Early in her married years, she taught Sunday school and vacation bible school at the Church.
Grace is survived by her son, Michael and his wife of 42 years, Janice, who reside in Pasadena, CA. Grace is also survived by her granddaughter Gracie Marie Barker also of Pasadena.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Loyd in 1999 to whom she was married for 56 years. She was preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Brandon of Costa Mesa, CA in 2005 and her 4 siblings, Joseph Lee Hanvey, Christine Smith, Gordon Hanvey and Eugene Hanvey.
In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to The Tipton Home for Children, Tipton, Oklahoma or the The John Tracy Clinic for hearing impaired children in Los Angeles.
