Obituary for Gene Zachary
Billy Eugene “Gene†Zachary, age 88, a lifelong resident of Lake Creek Community and Granite, Oklahoma, passed away Saturday January 11, 2020 at his home in Elk City, Oklahoma.
Gene was born in the Lake Creek Community, Granite, Oklahoma on September 10, 1931 to his parents Bertie Leslie “Doc†Zachary and Delia C. (Wright) Zachary. He attended Lake Creek School. On September 8, 1951 Gene married Sue Zachary. They were married for over sixty years and from this union two sons were born. The two made their home in Granite, Oklahoma and together raised their family.
Gene began as a farmer, then proceeded to the Oklahoma State Reformatory as a correctional officer for 31 years. He was Captain of the guards, known as Captain Zachary. His work ethic and character was held with high regard among everyone who knew him. Gene owned a trenching business for over 20 years. After he retired, he became the ranger for Girl Scout Camp for 10 years. Gene was an avid hunter, fisherman, strong conservationist. The enjoyment of his life was attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events and activities. His children and grandchildren were the joy of his life. He was particularly proud of his grandson, Aaron, serving our country in the armed forces. Nothing thrilled him more than seeing the love for hunting and fishing that he passed down to his family. You could find him tending to his garden and shelling his pecans at any given time. Gene was a member of the Lions Club and served for seven years for the Granite City Council where he served as trustee, vice mayor, and mayor for the town of Granite. Gene was a long time member of the Granite Church of Christ.

Zachary; his sister, Marion “May†Embry; his brother, Junior Zachary; brother-in-law, Dwight Embry; sister-in-law, June Zachary, his nephews, Ronnie Embry and Randy Embry. Gene is survived by his wife, Sue Zachary of Elk City; son, Nick Zachary and wife Jennifer of Sayre; son, David Zachary and wife Teresa of Granite; grandchildren, Rod Zachary and Kim of Mangum, Scout Zachary and wife Robin of Mangum, Zac Zachary and wife Tara of Mangum, Aaron Zachary and wife Karen of Wiesbaden, Germany, Mikki Zachary and Casey of Tonkawa, great grandchildren Cody, Candice, Laken and husband Randy, Casey, Ty Cobb, Zarah, Hadley, Cale, Caylor, Eli, Noah, Cabrey, and Jett; great great grandchildren, Miller, Fisher, Cora, Connlee, Malachi, Gideon, Elizabeth; Nephew, Doug Zachary and wife Marlene of Clute, TX; niece, Darlene Embry of Oklahoma City; and many other family members and many friends.
