Gary Lee Thompson, a devoted Freemason, patriot, and friend to all, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2025, in Knoxville, Tennessee, at the age of eighty-four. A former resident of Altus, Oklahoma, and most recently Luttrell, Tennessee, Gary’s life was marked by his unwavering commitment to service, his deep love for his family, and his genuine passion for making the world a better place.
Born on February 13, 1940, in Windom, Minnesota, Gary was the second of sixth children born to George Bernhard Thompson and Leona Irene (Starr) Thompson. He grew up in Henning and Murdock, Minnesota, where he attended high school before enlisting in the United States Air Force. As an aircraft mechanic and later a flight engineer on the C-141. Gary’s military career spanned many years and saw him stationed and deployed all over the world. His dedication to his country took him across the globe, where he had the distinct honor of serving President’s Nixon and Carter during overseas tours, ensuring the safety of their transport missions.
Throughout his travels, Gary was always mindful of the ones he loved. No matter where his missions took him, he made sure to bring back special mementos for his family, sharing the world with them in the form of unique gifts from distant lands. While being stationed in Altus, Oklahoma he met the love of his life, Janice, when Gary spotted her behind the wheel of a 1955 Chevy convertible, it was love at first sight. Gary would often say he won so big because he won the girl and car. Together, they built a family and were blessed with two children. Gary’s commitment to service extended beyond his military career. After retiring from the Air Force, he continued to contribute to his country’s defense, working for the Department of Defense in Nigeria serving at the U.S. Embassy. His next chapter led him back to Altus, Oklahoma in 1986 where he shared his knowledge as a flight engineering instructor. Embarking on a new adventure with Saudia Arabia Airlines, teaching flight engineering to the young crew members. It was during these six years that he got to take his beautiful bride, Janice across the world and show her some of his favorite sites. It was truly a magical time in their lives.
After retiring again, Gary never stopped working or serving. No matter where he lived, Gary immersed himself in the community, always ready to lend a hand, share a smile, and offer a helping heart. His love for people was evident in everything he did, and his kindness was felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
A proud member of the Freemasons, Gary was a 33rd degree Master Mason, a Shriner and was deeply involved in all the lodges he was a member of. He arrived early, stayed late, and was always willing to serve in any capacity—whether it was preparing meals, mentoring young Masons, or sharing his wisdom with others. His dedication to the Masonic order was a testament to his belief in brotherhood, charity, and truth.
Gary leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication to others. His life was defined by his selflessness and his commitment to making the world a better place, one person at a time.
