Obituary for Gary Amel Jones
Gary Amel Jones passed away Saturday, December 7, 2019, in Owasso, Oklahoma at the age of 86.
He was born at the home of his parents Henry Amel and Nellie (O'Rear) Jones on October 22, 1933, North East of Altus, Oklahoma. As a child, Gary attended Ozark Elementary School and graduated from Altus, High School in 1951.
On March 8, 1953, he married Alceon Russell in Martha, Oklahoma. They lived in and around Altus their entire married life until March 2018 when they moved to Owasso, Oklahoma to be near family.
Gary was a farmer in Jackson County mostly growing wheat and cotton crops and raising cattle until his retirement in 2013 due to the loss of his vision. He served on the board of directors of the Cotton Growers Coop and enjoyed three years on the advisory board of NBC.
He spent time hunting birds and deer with his dad as a boy followed by his hobby of trap shooting for nearly thirty years. He served on the Oklahoma Trapshooting Association board of directors and was inducted into the Oklahoma Trapshooting Hall of Fame in 2004. He attended the Grand American five times, Southern Grand twice all but one Spring Grand and all the Midwestern and Southwestern Grands and traveled to Ohio, Texas, Arizona, and other locations to compete. He shot over 87, 850 singles, 77, 000 handicaps and 54, 000 double targets in his Amateur Trapshooting Association career winning many awards.
He enjoyed vacations with family and friends, coaching a successful little girls basketball team, water skiing, snow skiing, watching Altus football, Altus basketball, and was an avid OU football fan.
Gary is survived by his wife Alceon Jones, daughter; Vanessa Morgan and husband Marvin, Granddaughters; Hillary Heaps and husband Tim, Haley Cox and husband Shannon, son in law Jim Hughes and wife Shirley, great-granddaughters; Ellie Heaps, Hadley Heaps and Austin Cox, sisters; Jennifer Moran and husband Jerry, Linda Holloway, Niece; Alisha Holloway and husband Peter Mikelsons, Nephew, Richard Moran and wife Marisa, Great nephew; Kasen Moran, Great Nieces; Mylee Moran and Maris Mikelsons
Preceded in death by his father Amel Jones, his mother, Nellie Jones, and stepmother Aletha Jones.
