TOWN

Eugene A. Town (Gene) was born August 6, 1929 to Frank E. and Laura Goldie (Walters) Town in The Dalles, Oregon. He lived in various places in Washington State, Oregon and California. He graduated high school from Jackson County, Oregon in 1948.

A veteran of two wars, Korea and Vietnam, he was also stationed in Massachusetts, England, Oregon, Michigan and California. Gene was an Air Traffic Controller while in the military. While in Massachusetts, he married the love of his life, Frances A. Smith, on May 9, 1953, in her hometown of Northampton. This union produced their son, Dale Richard Town on October 23, 1954.

Gene retired from the military in 1971, at McClellan AFB in Sacramento, CA. He then spent the next twenty years working as a salesman for Standard Brands paints.

In 1991, he and Fran sold their house in California and moved to Altus to be near their son, Dale. They also bought the first of many RVs, joined the Special Military Active and Retired Travel (SMART) Club and traveled extensively across America and Canada. This passion also allowed him and his wife to participate in the archeological studies and restoration of Fort Chadburn in Texas.

Gene was a skilled woodworker who crafted many quality items from something as simple as a game board to an entire workshop. He was an avid Joker player and if anyone would comment on the craftsmanship of the game more than likely they would walk away with one of them. He would then just go and make another one.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Frances; his brother Arnold and his sister Violet (Vi). He is survived by his son Dale Town and wife Carole of Altus; his former daughter-in-law Lilian Town of Conifer, Colorado; his step grandchildren Chris Buescher of Altus; Kathy Mills and Joe of Camp LeJeune, North Carolina; one great granddaughter Dixie Mills; his nieces Judy, Dory, Dan, Deb and Pat.

Gene fought a valiant battle against cancer but ultimately lost. He passed away peacefully, at his home, early Monday morning, September 30, 2013.

His family appreciated all of his friends who supported him as well as Jackson County Memorial Hospital Hospice.

Flowers may be sent to Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to either the American Cancer Society or to Jackson County Memorial Hospital Hospice.
