Obituary for Esther Olivia Hughey
Esther "Libby" Olivia Hughey, a beloved longtime resident of Mangum, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her cherished family, on September 17, 2024, at the age of 69.
Born on April 1, 1955, in Hobbs, New Mexico, to Gayden and Beatrice Lanford, Libby's early life was marked by a deep sense of family and home. At the age of six, she moved with her family to Mangum, Oklahoma, where they lived until her third-grade year, before relocating to Memphis, Tennessee. It was there that Libby completed her education, graduating from Hillcrest High School in 1973. Despite her time away, Mangum always held a special place in her heart, and she returned in 1983, where she would build a life filled with love, service, and community.
On February 16, 1985, Libby married the love of her life, David Bruce Hughey, at Mangum First Baptist Church. Their marriage, which spanned nearly four decades, was blessed with two sons, Matthew and Michael. Libby's devotion to her family was boundless, and she took immense pride in caring for them.
Libby's hardworking nature was evident in all she did. She served the community of Mangum through her work at the courthouse before joining North Fork Correctional Facility in Sayre, Oklahoma. She would leave Northfolk to pursue other passions in 2000. In 2010, on her birthday, she and David fulfilled a dream by purchasing Bulldog Furniture in Altus, where she found joy in her daily interactions with customers, many of whom became dear friends over the years. Libby's warm and engaging spirit made her a beloved figure, known for her generosity, kindness, and the effortless way she could brighten any room. She had a rare gift for making everyone feel seen, remembered, and appreciated.
Libby cherished life's simple pleasures. She loved visiting the casino, exploring garage sales, and finding treasures to gift her friends and family. She never forgot a face and always took the time to ask about the well-being of others, radiating warmth and care in every encounter. Her bubbly spirit and loving personality will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Libby is preceded in death by her parents, Gaydon and Beatrice Lanford; her parents-in-law, Nadine and Chester Hughey; her nephew, Kenny Bell; and her brother-in-law, David Bell.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 39 years, David Hughey; her two sons, Matthew Hughey and Michael Hughey; her brothers, Hal Wilson and his wife Jan, and Johnny Lanford; her sister, Cathy Mills and her husband Steve; her sister-in-law, Diane Bell; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and her treasured customers.
Libby's warmth, kindness, and generosity of spirit touched many lives. She will be remembered fondly and missed dearly by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

The Hughey family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 20, 2024 at Greer Funeral Home, Mangum, Oklahoma.

Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 21, 2024 at Roselawn Cemetery, Mangum, Oklahoma with Jeff Dill officiating.

Funeral services have been entrusted to Greer Funeral Home, Mangum, Oklahoma.
