Esther Cleona Atchley, age 75, of Mangum, passed away Saturday morning, September 19, 2009, at Mangum Community Hospital.
Ms. Atchley was born on February 23, 1934, in Gould, Oklahoma to Odie Corbett and Alice Jane (Hepler) Atchley and was baptized at the age of nine. After beginning school at Gould, the family moved to Mangum in 1947, where Esther graduated from Mangum High in 1953. After graduation, she worked for Mr. Anderson, in his grocery store, at M.E. Moses, and chopped cotton for a living. A longtime resident of Mangum, Esther cared for other people, in their homes, in her later life. A fifty-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Esther enjoyed playing the piano, sewing, crocheting, gardening, working in her flowerbeds and being with her family and friends. In her younger years, she was also an avid CBer and was known by her handle, Friendship Base.
Preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lathel Corbett Atchley and Carthel Calvin (Slim) Atchley; one sister-in-law, Sue Atchley; one brother-in-law, Foy Kelly; one niece, Naomi and many other extended family members, she is survived by two sisters, Genevia Jeune Atchley Warren of Mangum and Lawana Octavia Kelly of Apache Junction, Arizona; nephews and nieces, Odie Kelly of Poway, California, Alice Wanetta Wilson of Apache Junction, Arizona, Diana Sue Lyle of Eunice, New Mexico, Calvin Dewayne Atchley of Branson, Missouri and C. Lynn Atchley of Mangum along with many other family members and friends.
Funeral services for Esther Atchley will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at the Rose Assembly Church with Pastor Gary Usher officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
