Obituary for Essie M. Carter
Mrs. Jimmy (Essie Mae) Carter, age 89, died January 1st, 1994, in the Jackson County Memorial Hospital. She was born in Altus, Oklahoma January 18th, 1904, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Lee Wynes, pioneer residents of Altus. She was educated in the Altus Schools, and in December 1920, became a Legal Secretary for Stansell Whiteside, Sr. In October 1923, she was appointed District Court Reporter for the 25th Judicial District of Oklahoma with Judge Frank Mathews. She continued in this capacity until January 1, 1935, when he retired. She continued with Judge John B. Wilson until he retired in March, 1946 to enter private practice, and later worked with Judge Weldon Ferris for two years. On January 9, 1953, she married Jimmy Carter of Altus who died November 25, 1982.

Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Elm & Hudson Church of Christ with Ed Lobaugh officiating. Interment will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell Tims Funeral Home.

Survivors include: a brother, Zeb B. Wynes of Lubbock, TX; two step-children, Jimmy Carter, Jr. and Camille Carter Simmons; four nieces and three nephews; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Jimmy Carter; two sisters, Mrs. Ralph J. Blair and Elfie Wynes; a brother, Elzie L. Wynes; a niece, Martha Jane Wynes Riffe; one nephew, Don Blair.
