Obituary for Elizabeth Allene Martin
Elizabeth Allene Dickson Martin, 74, of Altus, Oklahoma, died Sunday, February 27, 2011, at her home in Altus of complications from a 14-month battle with brain cancer. Allene was born May 14, 1936, in Childress, Texas, to Samuel Bryan and Katherine (Allen) Dickson. She came from a long line of educators and in 1960, launched her 21-year teaching career from Ankeny, Iowa. Allene earned a bachelor"s degree in secondary education from Iowa State University in 1958, and later converted to elementary education, having completed graduate level courses at the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Baptist University, and East Central University. In the span of her career, she taught various ages from kindergarten through ninth grade in Shawnee, Tecumseh, and Frederick, Oklahoma. Allene was elected 1983 "Teacher of the Year" in Tecumseh, but had to give up the honor due to a move to Frederick. After her retirement in 1993, Allene mentored students at Sunset Elementary School in Altus.
Allene met William Charles Martin at San Angelo College and they married July 4, 1957, in San Angelo, Texas. After starting a family and finishing school at Iowa State, the couple moved to Tecumseh in 1961. Allene and Charles enjoyed 53 years of marriage while raising three daughters. While the girls were growing up, Allene served as a Camp Fire leader and director, and . led three girls of the eldest daughter"s group completely through the Wohelo Medallion (equivalent to an Eagle Scout).
Having accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at age 9, Allene began teaching Sunday School in 1961. She taught preschoolers until her cancer was diagnosed last year. She was also active in the Adult Choir and on the Prayer Committee of First Baptist Church of Altus and worked part time in the Intercessory Prayer Ministry office. Allene played an active role in the Retired Educators Association, Eralethian Study Club, the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and a round table book club. She served as president of P.E.O., both in Altus and Tecumseh, and held other offices.
Allene"s hobbies included needlepoint, sewing, knitting, gardening, and attending her grandchildren"s special events. She and Charles and also enjoyed playing bridge and dominoes with friends. They regularly attended the senior citizen"s affairs at church and participated in community projects such as Habitat for Humanity and the Samaritan"s Purse Operation Christmas Child project for children in third world countries.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Timothy Bryan Nootbaar; and sisters, Mary Catherine Cheek and Elsie Ophelia Rankin.
Allene is lovingly survived by her husband of 53 years, William Charles Martin of Altus; three daughters, Martha Kimberly Nootbaar of Frisco, Texas, Particia Anne Lamle and husband Adam of Cache, Oklahoma, and Jenifer Elizabeth Siemens and husband Dwight of Bentonville, Arkansas; six grandchildren, Steven Christopher Nootbaar, Michael Martin Nootbaar, Autumn Lizabeth Lamle, Broderick Adam Levi Lamle, William Allen Siemens, and Emily Elizabeth Siemens; and by one sister, Patricia Jean Wilson and husband Lawrence of San Angelo, Texas.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Altus with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. The family will receive guests at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Lowell-Tims Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
Allene will lie in state Thursday, March 3, at Cooper Funeral Home in Tecumseh. The family will receive guests there Thursday from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 4, 2011, at the Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home.
