Being a caretaker was who Dorothy was. She helped take care of her younger brothers and sisters, then she chose to take care of people professionally entering the nursing field. She was a long time nurse’s assistant for Elk City Hospital. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for her patients; she was always trying to help them whether it was bringing them food to their home or helping them with their basic needs she was always a helping others.
She and David enjoyed taking their children to the beach, camping, fishing, riding horses, and raising livestock. Dorothy loved all animals and took immense joy in raising horses, chickens, pig, cows and goats.
Another huge aspect of Dorothy’s life was being a foster Mom. The Heil family took in countless children and once a child entered their home, they were family and always treated as one of her own, even after they left her care. In 2008 Dorothymoved to Magnum, Oklahoma to be near her family who had moved to the area.
