Obituary for Donna Brown
Donna Marie Brown passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at her home in Blair surrounded by family.
Donna was born on June 20, 1947 to Buster and Ruby Mae (Payne) Brown. She attended Blair School where she played basketball and graduated in 1965. She received her bachelors and master’s degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. She was a member of First Baptist Church Blair. Donna was a career teacher and a state and nationally recognized drama coach. Her first teaching job was at Tipton School where she produced a state championship drama team in 1978. From there she went to Navajo High School where her team won a State Speech Competition in 1982 and coached the first Oklahoma class B drama students to qualify for national competition. In 1986 she moved to Putnam City High School where she led countless students to state and national competitions. Donna was selected as Teacher of the Year in 1985-86 at Navajo School and again in 1997-89 at Putnam City School. Named the Outstanding Speech Educator by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) in 1990, 1998 and 2006. She was among the 1997 National Forensic League National Champion Coaches. While she didn’t have children of her own, you only need to talk to a former student, a niece or great nephew to learn she cared for many children as her own. She loved her students, friends and family deeply. Once you became a student of Miss Brown, you became family and she invested in you, deeply. She enjoyed spending time with her fellow drama coaches. She loved basketball and was a fierce and feisty competitor. She thoroughly enjoyed her morning coffee, a good book and loved her pup, Coco.
The true impact and legacy of Donna’s life will outlive us all. She was a sister, a daughter, an aunt, a teacher, a coach, a friend, a mentor, a caregiver. She was a gift. She loved unconditionally and lifted many up to reach the potential she saw in them rather than allowing mediocracy. To hear stories of the shenanigans of her youth and even adult years is a treat. She was a prankster and enjoyed a good laugh whether it was at herself or others expense. She created lifelong friendships that have proven to be a blessing for generations.
Preceded in death by: her parents, Ruby Mae Brown (Payne) and Buster Brown; her sisters, Gwen Collins and Gaylon Jasinski; her brothers, Stan Brown, Kenneth Brown, Elden Rae Brown and Richard Brown; her brother-in-law, Dave Jasinksi; niece and nephew, Jamea and Dean Jasinski.
Donna is survived by nieces and nephews, Randy Jasinski, Belinda Collins Morgan, Kim Murphy, Moses Saenz, Lisa Johnson and husband, Sunny, Robin Balentine, Holly Owen and husband, Patrick and Shawn Brown; sister-in-law, Joyce Brown; her lifelong best friend, Roberta Graves; special nieces, Andrea Decker, Brandie Combs, Sommer Knight and Danika Toole; numerous great nieces and great nephews and many friends.
