Donald "Chilly" Chilson, age 59, of Mangum, passed away Sunday morning, June 9, 2013, at his residence in Mangum.
Mr. Chilson was born in Coudersport, Pennsylvania on July 15, 1953, to Donald Willard and Gloria Ann (Ryder) Chilson. Living in several different places, due to his father"s position in the United States Air Force, the family moved to Colorado Spring, Colorado in 1968. While working at Walter Drake and Sons, Chilly met the love of his life, Billie Robinson. Finding who she was by looking at her time card, they began dating in November of 1973 and were married on March 2, 1974, in Colorado Springs. In December 1975, Chilly joined the United States Air Force. After assignments in Illinois, Texas, Colorado, England and Germany, the family moved to Altus Air Force Base in August of 1988 and he retired in December of 1994. While stationed at Lubbock, Chilly joined the Masons and in 1983, he became a Master Mason while stationed in England. After his retirement he worked at Ace Hardware in Mangum, dispatched part-time for the Mangum Police Department. Chilly later spent ten years with Civil Service from 1997 until 2007 and was later a camp host at Quart Mountain until 2010. A veteran of Desert Storm, he enjoyed bowling, golfing and fishing in his spare time.
Preceded in death by his father-in-law, Billy R. Robinson, he is survived by his wife, Billie, of the home; two daughters, Shawn Whetstone and husband Terry of Mangum and Dawn Chilson of Lubbock, Texas; two grandchildren, Matthew Whetstone and Cassandra Whetstone; his father and mother, Mugsy and Gloria Chilson of Mangum; his mother-in-law, Ellen Robinson of Mangum; one sister, Dianna Koegler and husband Frank of Prescott, Arizona along with many other relatives and friends.
Donald Chilson will lie in state at Greer Funeral Home, in Mangum, on Monday, June 10, 2013, from noon until 8 p.m. He will lie in state at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, in Altus, on Tuesday, from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, in Altus. In honoring Chilly"s wishes, he will be cremated after his military and Masonic services. Services are under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum and Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory, of Altus.
