LONG

Donald Ray Long, age 63, of Mangum, passed away early Saturday morning, July 18, 2009, at Mangum Community Hospital.

Don was born on July 4, 1946, to Odus Eugene and Mary Josephine (Hendley) Long in Anadarko, Oklahoma. After moving from Anadarko, as a youngster, the family lived in Chickasha for a short time before moving to Mangum where he graduated from Mangum High School. After a short time at Southwestern Oklahoma State College, in Weatherford, he was drafted by the United States Army, where he served from 1966 until 1968. Returning to Southwestern, he married Sandy Sewell and completed his first degree. After working in Oklahoma City at a chemical company, he returned to Mangum and worked in the Quality Control Lab at Republic Gypsum for fifteen years. During this time he married Kathryn Doyle and later left Republic Gypsum due to his declining health issues. Returning to school, Don completed x-ray technician school and worked at Perry and Lawton until his health began to fail again. In 1995, he received a heart transplant and later returned to Southwestern for a second Bachelors of Science Degree in History. Always active in the American Legion, Don served as the Service Officer for many years helping anyone he could, in addition to serving his community as the police and fire commissioner for a number of years. Fishing and golf were some of his hobbies, but spending time with family and friends was what he enjoyed most in life.

Preceded in death by his father, Odus Long, in 1972, and his wife Katherine in 2008, he is survived by his mother, Josephine Noblitt of Mangum; one daughter, Mary Ann Allen and husband Andrew of Ft. Mitchell, Alabama; one son, Michael Andrew Long of Mangum; two brothers, Ronald Eugene Long and wife Sue of Winlock, Washington and Bill Long and wife Pat of Piedmont; three grandchildren, Kirt Allen, Brandon Allen and Sarah Allen, all of Ft. Mitchell, Alabama; three stepchildren, Beverly Cypert of Oklahoma City, Clif Cypert and wife Candy of Chickasha and Benetta Cypert of Moore; three step-grandchildren, Sam Cypert of Chickasha, Ethan Johnson of Moore and Braden Johnson of Moore along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Don Long will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at Trinity Baptist Church with Pastor Cecil Deadman officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
