Cullen Martin Sanders, a devoted family man, hardworking professional, and friend to many, passed away on August 6, 2025, at his home in Duke, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to those he loved. Born on May 3, 1977 in Lawton, Oklahoma, to Don E. Sanders and Glenda G. (Martin) Sanders. He was the youngest child born into the family. He spent his early years in Olustee, Oklahoma. Cullen moved to Duke at the age of nine, where he would later build a life centered around faith, family, and service to others.
A proud graduate of Duke High School in 1996, Cullen continued his education at Southwestern Vo-Tech, where he studied electrical technology. His strong work ethic led him to Altus Athletics in 1998, where he crafted belt backs—a job that marked the beginning of a lifelong dedication to hard work and craftsmanship.
That same year, he married the love of his life, Corina Ruiz, whom he met in 1994 through a cousin. Their love would bring a son, Miklo, and a daughter, Mena.
For thirteen years, Cullen served at Walmart, starting by assembling bikes before rising to become the manager of the toy department, a role he cherished, especially during the holidays, as he brought smiles to countless children. After a brief hiatus, he began a new chapter in 2011 at Western Oklahoma State College, where he started as a security guard and was later promoted to Security Coordinator. His warmth, fairness, and dedication earned him the respect of students and colleagues alike, culminating in the 2021 OACC Outstanding Support Staff Award and the Commitment to Excellence Award.
Beyond his professional life, Cullen was a man of many passions. An avid basketball player since his high school days as a guard, he carried that love throughout his life, often playing during breaks at Western Oklahoma State College and forming lasting bonds with students over pickup games. He was also a devoted fan of hair metal—Black Sabbath, Guns N’ Roses, Def Leppard, and Metallica could often be heard blaring from his speakers.
At home, Cullen was a loving father who enjoyed playing Xbox—especially Fortnite—and watching TV—Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate, Marvel— with his kids. Cullen was always making time for laughter and connection. Whether installing sound systems, attending rock concerts, or simply being present for his family, he lived fully and loved deeply.
Above all, Cullen was a man you could rely on—always there for his family, coworkers, and friends with a helping hand, a listening ear, or a word of encouragement. His legacy is one of selflessness, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to lifting others up.
