Clyde Elgin Estes, 87, of Altus, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 29, 2016, at English Village, in Altus, Oklahoma.
Clyde was born in the Navajoe Community, on September 21, 1928, to Alva and Selma (Herring) Estes. He lived most of his life in the Navajoe and Altus communities. In May 1951, he met Helen Sue Reid at Olustee, Oklahoma and after a whirlwind courtship, they were married four weeks later on June 23, 1951. They made their home in the Navajoe Community until his service in the United States Army.
After being honorably discharged from the United States Army, he moved back to Altus in the late 50"s where he worked until opening Clyde"s Drive Inn from 1964 until 1975. Clyde then worked at the Irrigation District until he retired to farm and ranch fulltime.
Clyde is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Herman Estes, two sisters, Loreta (Estes) Hooper and Modell (Estes) Lewelling and one niece Floreta (Lewelling) Hughes. He is survived by his wife, Sue, of sixty-four years; two children, Zachary Estes and wife Nancy of Olustee and Connie Estes-Shelton and husband Kevin of Stillwater; four grandchildren, Kelsey Shelton, Kade Shelton, Reid Estes and Katy (Estes) Thurmond and husband Reese. Other survivors include two nieces, Arvella (Lewelling) Wall, Mileta (Lewelling) Meli and husband Jim; one nephew, Floyd Estes and many other relatives and friends.
Graveside services for Clyde Estes will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 3, 2016, at the Altus City Cemetery with Jerry Don Henry officiating. Services are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, of Altus.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association in memory of Clyde Estes.
