Obituary for Charles Edward Hatchett
Charles Hatchett, age 92, of Mangum, passed away Tuesday afternoon, August 16, 2011, at Kindred Hospital South, in Oklahoma City.
Mr. Hatchett was born in Athens, Alabama on September 12, 1918, to Charles and Mary (Coggins) Hatchett. As a child, the family moved to Clovis, New Mexico and a short time later to Granite. On September 11, 1943, he married the love of his life, Ollie Allen, and they spent the next sixty-seven wonderful years together. In the early 1970"s they moved to Mangum where he lived until his death. From 1954 until 1979, Charles was a loyal employee of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections and until the age of ninety, he mowed, tended flowerbeds and trimmed shrubs for anyone who needed work done. A proud veteran of the United States Army and longtime member of the American Legion, Charles proudly served his country during WWII. Charles was an avid OU fan who loved his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them play baseball and sometimes he joined in the game with them.
Preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Ava Stewart and a granddaughter, Lisa Waller, he is survived by his wife, Ollie Hatchett, of the home; one daughter, Carolyn Wyrick of Mangum; three grandchildren, Stephanie Wyrick of Altus, Charles Wyrick of Tulsa and Charlotte Holland of Mangum; thirteen great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; four sisters, Gladys Shelton, LaVonia Carpenter and Francis Kempf, all of Clovis, New Mexico and Gertrude Lane of Los Banos, California; one brother, Jerald Hatchett of Piedmont, Oklahoma and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Charles Hatchett will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 20, 2011, at the Mangum First Baptist Church with Elder C.C. Morris officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
