Obituary for Carroll Rufus Meyers
Carroll "Hot Shot" Myers, 83, of Oklahoma City, formerly of Altus, passed away Friday, September 3, 2010, at St. Anthony"s Hospital in Oklahoma City.
Carroll was born at the family farm in Friendship, Oklahoma, on May 4, 1927, to Roscoe and Irene (Jones) Myers.
He was Valedictorian of his graduating class at Friendship High School in 1945. Carroll was a talented basketball player at Friendship High, and he was a key member of their undefeated state championship team. After making a basket from mid-court in the state championship game, he received the nickname "Hot Shot" and was called that for the rest of his life.
After graduating high school, Carroll joined the United States Navy"s V-12 Pilot Training Program and was stationed at the Dallas Naval Air Station. He attended college in this program, including terms at Southern Methodist University, University of Texas at Arlington, and Oklahoma State University.
On January 15, 1949, Carroll married Bettye Jane Rollins, also of Friendship. Carroll was employed in the custom wheat harvesting business and later as a truck driver. He retired from Republic Gypsum of Duke, Oklahoma, and shortly thereafter, Bettye preceded Carroll in death in 1968.
In 1976, Carroll married Carolyn Kilburn Badger. Carolyn also preceded Carroll in death in 1997.
Carroll was an avid bridge player since his teenage years and achieved a "Life Master" designation from the American Contract Bridge League. He spent the last twelve years in Oklahoma City, with the last several months living at Quail Ridge Assisted Living.
Carroll is survived by a son, Ron Myers; a daughter, Tawna Shultz and husband David Shultz; grandsons, Derek Myers of Boise, Idaho, Jared Myers of Eugene, Oregon, Brandon Shultz of Chino, California, and granddaughter, Candace Kiehn of Oklahoma City. Also surviving him are three stepdaughters, Randy Badger Hubble of Oklahoma City, Lanie Badger of Moore, and Jennifer Badger Bogle of Altus; four great-granddaughters, five great-grandsons, three step grandsons, two step granddaughters, six step great-granddaughters, and two step great-grandsons.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held 11:00 am, Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at the Centennial Memorial in Altus Cemetery with Brandon Shultz and Zane Newton officiating. Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus is in charge of the arrangements.
