Obituary for Bonnie J. Shelton
Bonnie J. Shelton, a cherished resident of Altus, Oklahoma, and former resident of Blair, passed away at the age of 96, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on April 16, 1928, in Elk Creek, California, to Tillman P. Anderson and Pearl Gardner Anderson, Bonnie's family returned to Southwest, Oklahoma, when she was just six weeks old. Raised in rural Kiowa County, she attended Koonkazachey, Lone Wolf and Hobart Schools and graduated from Hobart High School in 1946. She was raised in the Methodist Church and was baptized at Soldier Spring Creek, south of Lone Wolf, Oklahoma. Through a mutual introduction by her brother, Bonnie met Dale Shelton. Their love blossomed, leading to their marriage on February 18, 1960, in Fort Worth, Texas. They made their home in Blair, where they were blessed with two children: daughter, Teresa (Terri) and a son, Kevin. Bonnie began her career as a bank teller at NBC Bank in Altus and in 1960 began her career with the Jackson County Treasurer's Office as a deputy clerk. In 1993, she ran for the position of county treasurer and won, known for her deep knowledge of the community and her passion for helping others navigate county government. She fully retired in 1999, taking a year to relax and enjoy her new found freedom.
In her retirement, Bonnie immersed herself in reading, particularly fiction, and devoted her time to volunteering. She served as a Pink Lady at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. A big part of Bonnie's life was her faith in Jesus Christ. She was a longstanding member of the First Baptist Church of Blair. Wherever Bonnie was needed she helped in the church. She taught Bible School, served on countless committees, and assisted with meals and nursery care. Her favorite holiday was Thanksgiving, a time she cherished preparing meals and spending time with her family. Bonnie took great pride in being a mother, but her greatest joy was being a grandmother, affectionately known as "J" and "Grandma."
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Jerry Anderson, and her granddaughter, Kelsey Christine Shelton.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Dale Shelton; daughter, Terri Langham; son, Kevin Shelton and his wife, Connie (Estes) Shelton; her sister, Bonita Ray; her brother, Glen Anderson; three grandsons, Bud Langham and wife, Jill, T.J. Langham, and Kade Shelton and wife, Miranda; and three great-grandchildren, Nathan, Matthew, and Bennett Langham.
