After a long and happy life, Bobby Jean Boone, 90, passed away peacefully on April 19th, 2025, in Tulsa, Oklahoma surrounded by her loved ones.
Bobby was born in Gould, Oklahoma on October 13th, 1934. She was the fourth child of Sam and Eva Penington. She grew up on the farm, working in the garden, tending to the chickens, and working in the cotton fields. Her family was active in church and in the Ron community. Bobby was a happy person and full of energy. Bobby graduated in 1952 after attending Ron school for all 12 grades. She was an eager participant in school activities including basketball, where she was a star! Her spunk and tenaciousness made her a fierce competitor. She was a good, and loyal friend. She cherished her friendships, developing them at each stage in her life, with most of these friendships lasting a lifetime.
May 3, 1952 Bobby Jean Penington married Douglas Boone in Hollis, Oklahoma. They remained in a loving and supportive marriage for almost 62 years until Doug’s passing in 2013. During that 62 years, they had an adventurous and fun life. They raised two daughters, Patricia and Sheila. Bobby was a hands on parent. She supported and participated in both of her daughters’ activities from kindergarten throughout high school. After their daughters moved away, Bobby and Doug stayed busy with many activities including square dancing, fishing, camping, road tripping, gardening, raising chickens and goats. These were a few of the things they enjoyed doing together. Bobby never said no. It was always, “Let’s go!”
Bobby was a wonderful mother, however, she was an even more amazing grandmother. She delighted in everything about her new role and took on the title of “Grandma” with gusto. She made it a point to be engaged as much as possible with her grandsons, Scott, Crosby, and Jaxon, often traveling many miles to attend their school events. Bobby also shared her grandmotherly love with children at church, by attending the nursery and teaching Sunday school classes.
Bobby retired from Great Plains Bank after twenty years of service. She never met a stranger and enjoyed working as the outside window teller. She knew almost everyone in town!
After Doug unexpectedly passed away in 2013, Bobby found herself in an entirely new situation. She was retired, widowed, and living alone for the first time. She loved Harmon County. She did not choose to sit back and stop living. She instead surrounded herself with friends and family and lived her best life. She attended lunch with her fellow seniors each day, she made new friendships and continued old ones. She was an active member of the Hollis Church of Christ. She helped and volunteered where she could. She spent time with her great-great nephews. She traveled with her daughter and with her nieces. She could be seen zipping around town in her orange Saturn, always up to something. She filled her time with fun, laughter, and adventure.
She moved to Tulsa in July of 2021, to be near her daughter and grandsons. She lived in Tulsa for the four years before her passing. Bobby was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Boone, her daughter, Sheila Bartels, her parents, Sam and Eva Penington, and her siblings, Frankie Dunn, Charles Penington, and Sammy Penington. She is survived by her daughter Trish Bartlett and spouse Patty Castillo. Three grandsons, Scott Bartlett and wife, Joy Bartlett, Jaxon Castilo and wife, Zoe Sifter, and Crosby Bartels. She also leaves many family members and friends who will miss her dearly, including her great-great nephews Garrett, Gage, and Gus Shotts.
