Obituary for Betty M. Craven
Betty M. Craven, age 67, died at Southwestern Hospital in Lawton, Oklahoma on Saturday, September 3rd, 1994, after a lengthy illness.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, Altus, with Rev. Ken Pate and Rev. Michel D'Annecy officiating. Burial will be at the Altus City Cemetery. Arrangements are with Lowell Tims Funeral Home.
She was born at Altus on August 29th, 1927, to Mark and Fannie Kerr and married Dean Craven at the Altus Methodist Church on November 6, 1949. She always considered Altus as her home, even though her father was in the construction business and moved frequently to where his work took him. She attended schools at Friendship, Altus, Oklahoma City and San Antonio and was a 1945 graduate of Altus High School in the top ten of her graduating class.
Betty attended college at the University of Oklahoma, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy in 1949 and became a Registered Pharmacist in January of 1950. While at the University, she was a member of the Rho Chi (Honorary Pharmacy Society), the Drug Store Cowboys, the OU Pharmaceutical Association, was chosen as the OU Pharmacy School's first Pharmacy Queen in 1947, was the OU delegate to the national convention of Lambda Kappa Sigma in Baltimore, MD in 1947, was President of that organization (a pharmacy women's organization) in 1949 and was chosen as the Outstanding Senior Woman in Pharmacy.
During her high school years, she was employed at Cumby Drug Store on the south side of the square in Altus, where she became interested in pharmacy as an occupation. After graduation from college she did her internship at Guffy Drug in Wichita Falls and worked as a Registered Pharmacist in Grove, OK, Snyder, Frederick, and drug stores in Altus including South Main Drug, Park Lane Drug, Central Pharmacy and most recently, Bunker Hill Drug until ill health forced her retirement in 1988.
She was a member of the Gamma Mothers' Club in Altus and a lifetime member of the Methodist Church, transferring her membership to whereever home was in order to be active in the work of the church. Her membership has been at the Altus First United Methodist Church since moving back to Altus in February of 1956, having served on several committees, the Official Board and President of the United Methodist Women.
For the last several years, she has been active in the Oklahoma Association of Porcelain Artists, the Altus and Hobart Porcelain Artist Clubs, having served as President and Historian of the Altus Club.
After marriage, her family was the most important part of her life, and her pleasure was in giving support to her family in their activities.
Survivors include: her husband Dean of the home; Mark and Sue Craven of Altus; Nancy and Bill Thomason of Perry, OK; grandchildren Brian, Scott, Kevin and Kyle Thomason and Macie Craven; a brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Robbie Kerr of Altus; other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Altus, The American Cancer Society or the Cleo Craig Memorial Cancer and Research Clinic, Lawton.
