Betty Ann Varney, a longtime resident of Altus, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 23, 2025, in Norman, Oklahoma. She was eighty-six years old. Betty was born on January 3, 1939, in Altus, Oklahoma, to Bose and Mildred (Chenault)
Halcomb. A proud Altus High School graduate of the class of 1958, she built a life rooted in family, friendship, and dedicated service.
In 1960 Betty was blessed with a son, Hobert. She was a loving, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Betty dedicated forty-four years of her life to Jackson County Memorial Hospital, serving as a sterile processing technician before retiring in April 2016. Her commitment to her work was matched only by the lasting friendships she forged there, staying in close contact with dear friends Mary Stuard and Josie Brown throughout her life.
Betty was a woman of simple pleasures. She found joy in watching the birds, relaxing by the koi pond her son built for her, and following her favorite soap operas and game shows. She never turned down a milkshake or an ice-cold Dr. Pepper.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bose and Mildred Halcomb, and her sister and brother-in-law, Patsy and Butch White.
She is survived by her son, Hobert Varney, and wife Regina of Altus; her brother, Bart Halcomb and wife Kathy of Blair; three grandchildren: Danny and wife Tammi of Piedmont, Elizabeth of Altus, and Melissa of Norman; and one great-grandchild, Cayden of Piedmont. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and her cherished canine companions, JoJo, Princess, and Junebug.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to her devoted caregivers and chosen family, Haven Allen and her son, Kasten Allen, for their loving care and support in her final years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Betty’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or a local animal shelter.
The Varney family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, Altus, Oklahoma.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 28, 2025, at Altus City Cemetery, Altus, Oklahoma.
