Obituary for Bessie Edwine Brogan
Bessie Edwine Brogan of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away Wednesday, March 25th, 1987 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Services have been announced for 4:00 p.m. Saturday, March 28, 1987, at the First United Methodist Church, officiated by the Reverend John Welch, it's Pastor. Burial will be in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell Funeral Home.
Bessie was born December 5th, 1900 in Mississippi, the daughter of William Edward Mabry Brogan and Bessie Bell Walton Brogan. Her paternal grandfather was John Cornelius Brogan, an Irish immigrant and Methodist Minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church South and Chaplain during the War Between the States. Her paternal grandmother was Martha Louise David of Alabama, a cousin of Jefferson Davis.
Bessie was educated in the public schools in Mississippi and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Oklahoma. Following residence in Oklahoma City with her parents, where her Father was a Minister at the Wesley Methodist Church, they moved to Altus in 1924, where she began teaching at Washington Grade School. After teaching several years there, she began teaching English at Altus High School and for Altus Junior College, where she also taught occasional courses. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary educational organization. She was an active member, officer and teacher at the Altus First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Wesleyan Service Guild. She was also a member of several educational and professional organizations. In her forty-five years of daily teaching, she was part of educating thousands of Altus youth.
Survivors include: two cousins, Evelyn P. Jackson of Laurel, Mississippi and Donna Lynn Jackson of Jackson, Mississippi.
