Barbara (Vernon) Smith was born July 19, 1932 in Blair, Oklahoma to Winnifred (Martin) Vernon and George B. Vernon. She started grade school in Altus and grew up in Southwest Oklahoma graduating from high school in Elk City in 1950. At that time she went to work for Oklahoma A&M Extension Service, working one year in Pauls Valley as Assistant Home Demonstration Agent. In 1955 she married Gerald Smith. She then transferred with Extension to become the Assistant Home Demonstration Agent for Jackson County and later became Home Demonstration Agent. In 1983 Bill Austin and Gerald Smith opened Lady Austin's with Barbara as manager and buyer. After working there for 13 years the store was sold when Bill Austin and Gerald retired in 1996.

Barbara joined Aldonian in 1966 and has remained an active member for 57 years holding various offices including President. She is also a member of Chapter CM of PEO and a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church. One of the things she enjoyed most was the close friendships she had with those in her coffee group which was started in 1992. She and Gerald also enjoyed traveling with their circle of friends on many trips ranging from Europe to Alaska and going on several cruises.

She was preceded in death by her father George B. Vernon and mother Winnifred (Martin) Vernon and her only sister George Ann Waller.
