Obituary for Barbara F. Vanlandingham
Barbara Vanlandingham, 82, of Hollis, OK passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at Colonial Manor II in Hollis, OK.
Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Hollis. Family visitation will be Monday, October 27, 2025 5 pm to 7 pm at Harmon County Funeral Home.
Barbara was born December 15, 1942 on her grandparents' farm in Devil's Canyon near Lugert OK to Carl and Elva Hopkins Shumate. They later moved to Harmon county, and she was raised north of Gould, attending schools at Ron and Gould.
Barbara and her sisters sang gospel music from an early age and attended church at Brownlow Nazarene Church where their father was pastor. "The Shumate Sisters" provided ministry in music for decades at local churches, community, and family events.
Barbara married Windell Vanlandingham, July 12, 1959 in Hollis. They met at a dance at her parents' home when Windell was six years old and Barbara was three years old. Windell told his mother, at that time, that he was "going to marry that little girl someday". That marriage created "The Vanlandinghams" ministry in music with Barbara and Windell singing early on, and later adding their three daughters to their ministry.
Barbara taught Sunday School classes for several years at Brownlow Nazarene Church, First Baptist Church in Gould, and Hollis Nazarene Church. She also occasionally played piano and led congregational music. Barbara's life was centered around the Christian faith, church, and her love for music ministry. She leaves a legacy that will continue to live on through the countless lives she's touched through the Shumate and Vanlandingham family ministries.
Barbara worked as a bookkeeper for several local businesses until Windell and she opened OK Auto Sales & Services in the 1970s. They later added insurance and tag agency services, which remained open until 2008.
Barbara was preceded in death by her loving husband, Windell, parents, Carl and Elva Shumate, sisters, Uvelda Wilhelm and husband, Jim Bob, and Linda McGee and husband Jimmy, and sons-in-law, James Williams and Fred Woodman.
She is survived by her daughters, Vickie Nebling and husband, Monte of Altus, OK, Sharon McCarver and husband Bruce of Hollis, OK, and Katy Woodman of Chickasha, OK; sisters Carol Colson and husband Loyd of Hollis and Jackie Ballou and husband Jonnathan of Gould; grandchildren Jerrod Williams and wife Misty, Justyn Williams, Jeana Riley and fiance Paul Garetson, Buddy Nebling and wife Jamie, Derek McCarver and wife Jennifer, Carla Cress, Evan Woodman and wife Mandy, Randy Woodman and wife Heather, and James Woodman. She also leaves behind 24 great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
Services have been entrusted to Harmon County Funeral Home, Hollis, Oklahoma.
