Obituary for Alta W. Bates
Alta W. Bates Alta W. Bates, age 87, passed away September 12, 2000 at English Village Manor. Funeral Services are scheduled for Friday, September 15,2000 at 10;00 AM at the Church of the Nazarene in Altus, Rev. T. O. Parson and Rev. Gary Bohannon officiating. Interment will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. Mrs. Bates was born November 15, 1912 in Altus to Austin Wheeler and Ada Bell Hounshell. She was raised in Altus and graduated from Altus High School in 1933. She attended Sparks Memorial Nursing School in Ft. Smith, Arkansas and became a Registered Norse in 1944. She was an army cadet nurse for 18 months during World War II. She married Raymond M. Bates in Vernon, Texas on October 27, 1945. She worked as a Registered Nurse for Dr. Mabry. She was Chief nurse at the old hospital in Altus until it closed and worked at Jackson County Memorial Hospital when it opened in 1949. She worked at the Altus Air Force Base Hospital for twenty years, retiring in 1975. She is survived by two nephews, Ronald Cornelius and wife Sue of Altus, Oklahoma, Jim Altaffer and wife Katherine of Edmond, Oklahoma, and three great nieces; Carol Rankin of Sulphur, Oklahoma, Dee Dee Price of Asher, Oklahoma. Rhonda Ellis of Wisconsin, an one Great nephew, Burk Cornelius and Wife Michelle of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and three great-great nieces, one nephew-in-law, Ken Gardner of Sulphur, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Raymond in November 3, 1975 and two sisters, Dorothy Cornelius an Clara Altaffer and one niece Jan Gardner.
