Obituary for Allen Gentry Hawkins
Allen Gentry Hawkins, age 86, died Wednesday, August 26, 1998 at his home in Altus, Oklahoma. Allen was born June 14, 1912 in Nixa, Christian County, Missouri, to Herbert and Frances (Nichols) Hawkins. Allen received the Lord at the age of 9 and was baptized at the Riverdale Baptist Church in Nixa, Missouri. He graduated from Nixa High School in 1931. In 1935 he received a B.S. degree in geology from Drury College, Springfield, Missouri, with a minor in economics and was a member of Sigma Nu social fraternity.
After college he worked as a geologist for Pure Oil Company from 1935-1950. He was an independent geologist from 1950-1968 and owner of the Bristex Company in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. From 1968 to his death he was owner and president of American Well Services, Inc. in Altus, Oklahoma and a consulting geologist for Phillips Petroleum. He was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Association of Independent Petroleum Geologists, Oklahoma Geological Society, as a certified petroleum geologist and a charter member of The Petroleum Club, Oklahoma City, OK.
Allen was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. He was a member of the Guthrie Scottish Rite and York Rite. He was past president of the Pioneer Flying Club and Alfa Eta Rho. He was a licensed pilot and loved flying his own planes until the age of 80.
Allen and Olga Shadid were married June 21, 1963 in Altus by Rev. Gene Garrison. Hawkins is preceded in death by his parents; step-mother Lola Clark Hawkins; infant sister Lucy Elizabeth Hawkins; and brother, Kirk Wasson Hawkins.
He is survived by his wife, Olga, of the home in Altus; two daughters, Ann Hawkins Coleman and Martha Hawkins Thompson and her husband Preston of Oklahoma City, OK; sister, Mary Jane Pollard and husband James; sister-in-law Helen Hawkins, all of Nixa, Missouri; brothers-in-law, Abe, Phillip and Ned Shadid of Altus, Oklahoma; Coy Shadid and wife Jimmie of Edmond, OK, sister-in-law Lila Shadid of Altus, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association, India Temple Transportation Fund or Jackson County Memorial Hospice.
The family will be receiving friends from 6:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday evening August 27, 1998 at Lowell Tims Funeral Home.
Services are set for 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 28, 1998, in the chapel of Lowell Tims Funeral Home with Rev. Keith Wiginton officiating. Interment will follow at the Restlawn Cemetery.
