SHUMAKER



Rev. Elbert L. Shumaker, age 97, a longtime resident of Mangum, Oklahoma, passed away Friday, December 15, 2017 at his son’s home in El Reno, Oklahoma.

Elbert Leigh Shumaker was born on June 26, 1920, in Creta, Oklahoma, near Eldorado, to Ernest Albert and Liffa Mae Maberry Shumaker. He was 3rd of their 6 children. He graduated from Midway High School in 1940 and later from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford in 1954. He continued on to study for the ministry. Elbert was licensed to preach in January 1943, and was assigned as pastor of the United Methodist churches in Hammon, Gotebo, Vinson-White Flat, Willow-Brinkman, Duke-Prairie Hill, Erick, Hollis, Sayre-Berlin and Eldorado. He retired from the active ministry in 1985. He continued his ministry will into retirement and loved to serve as pastor whenever he was asked. During his ministry, which covered more than 70 years, Elbert preached in 70 revival meetings during which 188 persons joined the church. He officiated at 582 funerals and 150 weddings.

Elbert married Carolyn Jan Neil in June 1962 in Duke, Ok where he was pastor and she joined him in ministry during their 55 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife Carolyn of their home in Mangum, son Lyndon and wife Meredith of El Reno, Ok, son Norman of Dallas, TX, grandchildren Connor, Brittany and husband Charlie, Reaghan and Grant, sisters in law Betty Shumaker and Yvonne Shumaker, as well as several nieces and nephews, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Dillon, Byrl, and Myrl Shumaker, and sisters Bonnie Walker and Ernesteen Easley.

In addition to his ministry and family, Elbert enjoyed hunting and working on the farm.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Mangum under the direction of Greer Funeral Home, Mangum, Oklahoma.

Memorial donations can be made to the FUMC of Eldorado, Ok in honor of Rev. Elbert Shumaker.
